Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to David Gordon Green’s latest, “Prince Avalanche.” Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch star in the film, which had its premiere Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival. Magnolia has tentatively planned a summer theatrical release.

Inspired by the Icelandic film “Either Way,” “Prince Avalanche” tracks two men working to repaint traffic lines on a highway ravaged by wildfire. Lisa Muskat, Derrick Tseng, Craig Zobel, James Belfer and Green produced.

“All of us at Magnolia are huge fans of David Gordon Green, and it’s been a dream for a long time to work with him,” said Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles. “‘Prince Avalanche’ is incredibly smart, funny, warm and engaging film, with indelible, iconic performances from both Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.”

Magnolia acquisitions exec Dori Begley negotiated the deal with John Sloss of Cinetic Media.

The company also acquired the documentary “Blackfish” at the festival.
