That didn't take long. Sundance Channel just announced a renewal for "Rectify," its first wholly owned original drama, which only premiered last week. The series, which was created by actor and filmmaker Ray McKinnon, has attracted serious praise from critics for its portrayal of Daniel Holden's (Aden Young) experiences after he's released from prison, where he's been on death row for 19 years of a sentence that was vacated due to DNA evidence.

The current season is a short one of six hour-long episodes set in the week of Daniel's return home, with the finale slated for May 20th. The second season, however, will have a longer 10-episode run slated for 2014. "Rectify" is executive produced by Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein of "Breaking Bad," and includes in an impressive cast Abigail Spencer, Adelaide Clemens, J. Smith-Cameron and Luke Kirby.

Sundance Channel's Sarah Barnett said in the announcement that "The response to 'Rectify' has been incredible. We feel as though this story has tapped into something truly unique, with both critics and audiences using their platforms to share such strong, personal reactions to this very distinctive TV series. There’s so much drama and character that’s been set up in the first season, it will be electrifying to see where Rectify goes in season two."

"Rectify" is shot on location in Griffin, Georgia -- the second season will go back into production later this year. With both this show and "Top of the Lake" in March, Sundance Channel is making a name for itself in the very competitive world of premium dramas.
