Sundance Film Festival had a great 2011, but there was one thing missing: The Racquet Club. Closed for significant (and much-needed) remodeling, its absence was keenly felt with overflow crowds at the Eccles and other venues.
However, Sundance has announced that the Racquet Club is back as the newly minted Park City Municipal Athletic Recreation Center. (Thankfully, you can expect it to be known as The Marc during the festival.) With 550 seats, the space has a new layout and a bigger screen.
The festival will also continue to expand its presence in downtown Salt Lake City with the addition of a 300-seat theater at the Salt Lake City Public Library, bringing the total number of SLC festival venues to six. Others are the Beehive Tea Room (Salt Lake City Festival Café), Broadway Center Cinemas, Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, Salt Lake Art Center and the Tower Theatre.
Also new for the 2012 edition, the New Frontier section will relocate to The Yard, with a co-exhibit at Salt Lake Art Center.
The 2012 Sundance Film Festival runs January 19-29. Expect the first programming announcement November 30.
