Sundance Fest Going Nationwide, For One Night Only by Eugene Hernandez (November 4, 2009)
For one night during the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, the event will expand beyond Park City, UT to theaters in eight American cities. On January 28, 2010, eight Sundance ‘10 filmmakers will take their films from San Franciso, CA to Brooklyn, NY and beyond. Dubbed Sundance Film Festival U.S.A, the new initiative is being pitched by the festival as “a night of ideas across the country.” In Park City on that night, the event will be anchored by the North American premiere of Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross’s “The Shock Doctrine,” based on the Naomi Klein book, featuring a screening of the film and a deeper discussion lead by Robert Redford. Meanwhile the fest will dispatch eight festival films and filmmakers to other American cities for a screening and Q & A, as well as pre-show program that includes highlights from the ongoing Utah festival. “The concept behind Sundance Film Festival U.S.A. is to ignite dialogue as people across the country engage in a collective film experience,” said Sundance Institute president and founder Robert Redford, in a statement. “We hope by speaking with artists about their work and experiencing the Festival as it is happening, audiences will be inspired to share opinions, discuss the key issues of our day and reflect on the role art plays in social change.” Participating cities and theaters include: Ann Arbor, MI (Michigan Theater), Brookline, MA (Coolidge Corner Theatre), Brooklyn, NY (BAM), Chicago, IL (Music Box Theatre), Los Angeles, CA (Downtown Independent), Madison, WI (Sundance Cinemas Madison), Nashville, TN (The Belcourt Theatre), and San Francisco, CA (Sundance Kabuki Cinemas). Closer to this year’s festival, organizers will announce the films and filmmakers that will be included in this new program. The move follows recent Institute initiatives at expanding the Sundance festival experience to other cities through the Sundance Institute at BAM series and the going Art House Project. “Each January the Sundance Film Festival is home to a collective energy around independent filmmakers and their work: there is a definite sharing of ideas, emotions and conversation,” said Sundance fest director John Cooper, in a statement, “And each January Bob Redford makes a point of reminding audiences that art and ideas know no boundaries. So we thought, it is time to experiment with physically expanding our reach.”
