Sure, Sunday tends to be overcrowded with high-end TV, including "True Blood," "The Newsroom," "Low Winter Sun," "Dexter," "Ray Donovan" and more, but what to watch the rest of the time? Every Monday, we bring you five noteworthy highlights from the other six days of the week.
"Nine for IX": "The Diplomat"
Tuesday, August 6 at 8pm on ESPN
Both ESPN and NBC have Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan documentaries in the works, but before we relive that drama, Jennifer Arnold and Senain Kheshgi direct this doc about another figure skater from slightly before their era -- East Germany's Katarina Witt, "the most beautiful face of socialism," whose fame and success in the sport also earned her constant surveillance from the Stasi.
"Luv": Broadcast Premiere
Wednesday, August 7 at 9pm on BET
Sheldon Candis' indie film, which premiered at Sundance last year, makes its world premiere on BET after being released in theaters in January. Hip hop star turned actor Common (who can also be seen in AMC's "Hell on Wheels") stars as Vincent, a recent parolee who spends the day with his 11-year-old nephew Woody (Michael Rainey Jr.) teaching him lessons, we start to realize, the kid would be better off without.
"Broadchurch": Series Premiere
Wednesday, August 7 at 10pm on BBC America
Written and created by Chris Chibnall ("Torchwood"), this British crime drama became an online phenom in the UK, lighting up Twitter over its eight parts and earning plans for an American remake that will begin filming in January. Olivia Colman ("Tyrannosaur") and David Tennant ("Doctor Who") star as a pair of detectives tasked with finding the culprit behind the murder of a young boy in a small seaside town.
"Clear History": Broadcast Premiere
Saturday, August 10 at 9pm on HBO
Larry David returns to HBO not with more "Curb Your Enthusiasm" but with an original movie that he co-wrote and that Greg Mottola directs. David stars in the film as a man who tries to start over on Martha's Vineyard under a new name after quitting an electric car company and selling his share just before it becomes worth billions. Jon Hamm plays the former boss who unexpectedly reappears in his life, and Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, Eva Mendes and Liev Schreiber are among the large, talented cast.
"The White Queen": Series Premiere
Saturday, August 10 at 9pm on Starz
Philippa Gregory's "The Cousins' War" series of novels gets a lavish limited series treatment in this co-production from BBC One and Starz that looks at the 15th century's Wars of the Roses through the eyes of three women -- Elizabeth Woodville (Rebecca Ferguson), Margaret Beaufort (Amanda Hale) and Anne Neville (Faye Marsay). James Frain, Max Irons and Janet McTeer also star.
