"Newshour" Special Report: Republican Convention
Monday, August 27 at 8pm on PBS
If you're looking for complete gavel-to-gavel coverage of this week's Republican National Convention in Tampa and next week's Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, PBS is the only broadcast network turning over all of prime time to both. Look for nightly coverage August 27-30 and September 4-6 -- though there's not going to be a lot to talk about tonight, given that Tropical Storm Isaac has forced the convention from four days down to three, with today's activities consisting only of a ceremonial ten-minute session.
"Push Girls": "Breaking Back In" (Season Finale)
Monday, August 27 at 10pm on Sundance
The Sundance Channel's classy reality show about four Los Angeles women living with disabilities comes to a season close tonight, though it has already been renewed for a second iteration. The finale finds Angela Rockwood making headway on her attempt to return to modeling and Auti Angel attending the premiere of her indie film.
"Futurama": "Naturama" (Summer Finale)
Wednesday, August 29 at 10pm on Comedy Central
"Futurama" closes out the first half of season nine of Matt Groening's animated comedy with an episode in which the Planet Express crew is reimagined as wild animals for a nature documentary. The show will be back for 13 more episodes in 2013.
James Caan Marathon
Friday, August 31 starting at 6am on TCM
Turner Classic Movies' "Summer Under the Stars" August stunt comes to an end with a day of films featuring James Caan. The day kicks off at 6am with "The Glory Guys" and runs through everything from 1975's dystopian actioner "Rollerball" to Michael Mann's 1981 drama "Thief."
"Doctor Who": "Asylum of the Daleks" (Season Premiere)
Saturday, September 1 at 9pm on BBC America
BBC America is airing the premiere of the new season of long-running sci-fi favorite "Doctor Who" on the same day as the UK premiere -- a smart move, given that this show is surely prone to piracy by fans too eager to wait for a later U.S. broadcast date. Matt Smith returns as the Eleventh Doctor for a series of episodes that will find married Companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) departing the story. Season premiere "Asylum of the Daleks" will reportedly contain every Dalek that has ever appeared on "Doctor Who" over the years.
Also worth a look: "Necessary Roughness," USA's dramedy about a therapist who specializes in treating performers and athletes, will have its summer finale Thursday, August 30 at 10pm; "Gigolos," Showtime's reality series about, you know, gigolos, returns for another controversial season (its third) Thursday, August 30 at 11pm.
