Dominic Cooper ("The Devil's Double," "Captain America") will play Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, in a new four-part drama being co-produced by BBC America and Sky Atlantic. With the fictional spy film franchise celebrating its 50th anniversary this past year, "Fleming" (a working title) promises to take a "no holds barred" look at the author and his colorful personal life.

The drama will follow how Fleming went from a sophisticated charmer leading a life of pleasure-seeking and living off his wealthy family to a Naval Intelligence officer following the start of World War II, one responsible for outrageous counter intelligence missions against the Nazis, ones that would inform the Bond books.

The series promises to be heavy with sex, intrigue and wartime boozing. Cooper said "Stepping into the shoes of the spy who not only created the enigmatic character of 007, but who fantasized about being him, has to be every actor's dream." BBC America's SVP of programming Richard DeCroce added that “Not only did Ian Fleming create one of the most iconic characters of all time, he actually lived a life as exciting as 007’s. We can’t wait to see Dominic Cooper bring his incredible talent to this role.”

Mat Whitecross, who co-directed 2006's "The Road to Guantanamo" with Michael Winterbottom, will helm "Fleming," which is written by John Brownlow ("Sylvia") and Don MacPherson ("Entrapment) and produced by Sarah Curtis. The series will shoot on location in the U.K. and Budapest early this year.

This won't be the first TV venture about Fleming's life. Charles Dance played the writer in the 1989 TV movie "Goldeneye: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming," while Sean Connery's son Jason played him in 1990's "Spymaker: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming." BBC's 2005 combo drama-doc "Ian Fleming: Bondmaker" had Ben Daniels in the Fleming role, while Bond girl Joanna Lumley presented the 2008 BBC doc "Ian Fleming: Where Bond Began."
