Donald Glover will only appear in five of the 13 episodes in Community's upcoming fifth season, Vulture reports. The actor/hip-hop artist wants to focus on his music career as Childish Gambino, and the move seemed amicable for the always-in-turbulence series.
But Glover's reduced screen time does have sad repercussions for his character Troy's inseparable friendship with Abed (Danny Pudi), which has always been one of the highlights of the show. "Community" has been on a roller coaster with the recent re-hiring of creator and showrunner Dan Harmon, a last minute renewal from NBC and the departure of Chevy Chase (though we don't think too many fans are broken up about that).
It seems like a harsh decision on Glover's part, but "Community" fans have been bracing themselves for season five to be the comedy's last. Good things will surely come out of Glover's new time to focus on Childish Gambino, and hopefully Harmon will think of a great way to write Troy out. All that we ask is that they break the news to Abed gently.
