Lee Daniels Will Produce and Direct 'Empire,' a Drama Pilot Set in the World of Hip Hop

Lee Daniels' "The Butler" may have gotten shut out at this year's Academy Awards, but the acclaimed filmmaker will certainly have an opportunity to make up for it with his new television project "Empire," which according to the Hollywood Reporter has just gotten a pilot order at Fox.

"Empire" is a character-driven family drama depicting a behind the scenes look into the world of a hip hop empire and featuring both current and original music. Daniels brings with him onto the project his "The Butler" screenwriter Danny Strong (who recently wrote HBO's "Recount" and "Game Change") -- the two will executive producer alongside Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo.

Daniels will make his TV directing debut with the "Empire" pilot, which will be produced by Imagine Entertainment with 20th Century Fox Television, with the two of them additionally teaming up for "24: Live Another Day" and the upcoming midseason drama "Gang Related". Production on "Empire" is set to begin later this year.
