IFC and R. Kelly will be making more "Trapped in the Closet." The "hip-hopera" that started as the musical story of a one-night stand gone wrong has expanded from its 2005 beginnings to a sprawling 33 chapter saga with dozens of characters in which Kelly plays multiple roles, and a little person stripper and Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar from "The Wire") also appear.
IFC first joined up with the R&B star in 2007, and has in the years since hosted online and helped produced new installments of the story as it's rolled out.
IFC announced today that "Trapped in the Closet" would be returning with new chapters in 2014. "R. Kelly is an enormously talented artist and his creativity is on full display in 'Trapped in the Closet,'" said IFC's Jennifer Caserta. "We are fortunate to be his partner in this one-of-a-kind project that has captivated viewers and can't wait to bring the next chapters of Trapped to IFC."
R. Kelly is the creator, executive producer and co-director (with Jim Swaffield) of "Trapped in the Closet" as well as its star. All 33 existing chapters will be aired on IFC on December 7th at 5:15pm, and are available online here. Kelly's new album, "Black Panties," is due out next week. Here he is talking about his directorial/acting process on the set of "Trapped in the Closet" last year:
