Everyone wants scripted programming these days -- even the Discovery channel, which will take its first dig into scripted TV with gold rush miniseries "Klondike." Based on Charlotte Gray’s book "Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike," the six-part period drama is produced by Ridley Scott, directed by Simon Cellan Jones ("The One and Only") and stars Richard Madden (King of the North Robb Stark on "Game of Thrones," returning to snowy terrain), Tim Blake Nelson, Abbie Cornish, Tim Roth and Chris Cooper.
The trailer, below, seems to promise an exploration of American Naturalism and a "man versus nature" theme, even including famed author Jack London as a character. The series will follow the lives of two childhood best friends, Bill (Madden) and Epstein (Augustus Prew), in the late 1890s as they flock to the gold rush capital in the untamed Yukon Territory to claim their fortune. The series is slated to air in January of 2014.
