In a master stroke of metatextual casting, Lionsgate Television announced today that Lindsay Lohan has been cast to play Charlie Sheen's love interest in an upcoming episode of the FX sitcom "Anger Management."

The casting of Sheen as the lead in "Anger Management," based off the 2003 Jack Nicholson/Adam Sandler film, was itself a play off the actor's public meltdown and departure from CBS' "Two and a Half Men." He had a far from amicable parting of ways from his last employer, but in his cable series takes the role of anger management therapist Dr. Charlie Goodson. After the show was given its giant, contractually determined 90-episode renewal, Sheen's father Martin Sheen even joined the cast as the protagonist's dad.

Lohan has had plenty of well-publicized troubles of her own in the past, most recently documented in Stephen Rodrick's must-read New York Times Magazine piece from January which outlined just how difficult she was to deal with during the filming of Paul Schrader's "The Canyons." This makes her a kind of perfect pairing for Sheen, despite the 21-year age difference -- they're both infamous PR messes in need of image rehab, something Sheen has at least partially managed and something of which Lohan is in dire need.

According to Lionsgate, Lohan will play a character who forms a romantic relationship with Sheen's after becoming his therapy patient. Sheen and Lohan also both play themselves in "Scary Movie 5," set to premiere on April 12.
