NBC Renews Bryan Fuller's Serial Killer Drama 'Hannibal' for a Second Season

'Hannibal'

Of the ever-growing number of serial killer shows on television these days, Bryan Fuller's "Silence of the Lambs" prequel "Hannibal" is certainly the best, an elegantly disturbing drama about the professional partnership and friendship between FBI criminal profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and psychiatrist and not-yet-discovered serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). And NBC announced today that the series has been renewed for a second 13-episode season to air in 2014, no earlier than midseason.

The renewal was by no means a safe bet, despite the critical acclaim the show has received. It probably received some help from NBC's erratic year, with the network pointing to the upscale income level and young median age of the audience (45.7) and the heavy time-shifting involved for many who watch it.

The second season announcement is welcome news to those who've been enjoying the fine performances from Dancy and Mikkelsen, as well as supporting players Laurence Fishburne, Caroline Dhavernas and Hettienne Park. The series is produced by Gaumont International Television, Dino De Laurentiis Company and Living Dead Guy Productions, and co-commissioned internationally by Sony Pictures Television.
