While there's no update on the status of Sean Durkin's television series adaptation of "The Exorcist," early reports of which surfaced in May, the "Martha Marcy May Marlene" director does have another TV project set to happen in the immediate future.

Durkin's been signed to direct "Southcliffe," a four-part drama being commissioned by UK's Channel 4 and scripted by Tony Grisoni, the writer of the acclaimed 2009 "Red Riding" trilogy -- also a Channel 4 effort, though it received a theatrical release here in the US.

"Southcliffe" is about the fictional market rown of the title, one that's devastated by a series of shootings taking place in a single day -- certainly a variation on a scenario that's become unfortunately familiar. The drama will follow a journalist who's returned the town, his childhood home, as well as others close to the victims.

Per Grisoni:

Southcliffe is a fictional market town inhabited by fictional characters, but with similarities to many actual people and places in Britain today. Invisible people, anonymous places. The inexplicable chain of events at the dark heart of this 4-part drama shatters Time and Space for Southcliffe's inhabitants. Violence and sudden bereavement confronts them with emotions they are unequipped to understand. Rather than analyse or moralise about our characters' actions, we share in them. Southcliffe is an anthem to ordinary people's ability to reinvent themselves in the face of ultimate darkness.

"Southcliffe" will be Durkin's TV debut and will be broadcast in the UK in 2013 -- there's no American broadcaster in place yet.
