Kurt Sutter, the creator of "Sons of Anarchy," is more likely to be associated with tales of gun-running and biker gang violence than, say, comedy, but it's laughs he's going in search of in the new series he's developing for FX.
"Diva. Clown. Killer" is a dark comedy half-hour series that Sutter will write and executive produce with his wife and "Sons of Anarchy" star Katey Sagal as well as Belle Zwerdling. The show will focus on a has-been female rock star (a role Sagal is considering, schedule pending) whose heyday was in the '80s, her dyfunctional son who works as a clown at children's parties, and an assassin. The twist is they're all actually the same person! No, we're kidding. That's almost certainly not the twist.
Sutter doens't see the move from gritty drama to black comedy to be that big of a jumping, saying in FX's announcement that "I look at 'Sons of Anarchy' as being an intense drama, where the murder and mayhem are made palatable by absurd, dark humor. This half-hour will be an absurd, dark comedy, where the story is fueled by murder and mayhem."
The fifth season of "Sons of Anarchy" starts on FX on Tuesday, September 11th.
