Starz Developing Ballroom Dance Drama 'Blackpool' With Julianne and Derek Hough

Julianne Hough, "Dancing with the Stars" pro turned "Footloose" and "Safe Haven" lead, and her brother and fellow dancer Derek are partnering with Starz to develop "Blackpool," an original series set in the world of international competitive ballroom dancing. The Hough siblings will executive produce the series and serve as its head choreographers.

"Blackpool" will be centered around the annual comptetition in Blackpool, English, and will look at the "darker side of the glamorous world of ballroom dance." Said Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik, “The world of ballroom dance has captivated millions of people around the world, and there are no more recognizable superstars in this arena than Julianne and Derek. Their experiences growing up in this highly competitive world are riveting and also shocking. There is much more to uncover than what we see on the dance floor.”

This is the second dance project that Starz has put into development this year -- last month the premium network announced that it was working on a series from "Breaking Bad" co-executive producer Moira Walley-Beckett and "Inglourious Basterds" producer Lawrence Bender that promised to explore "dysfunctional underbelly of the ballet world."

The dance world -- apparently a well of endless dark, dysfunctional drama.

Julianne Hough, whose big break came from "Dancing with the Stars," is next slated to appear alongside Russell Brand and Octavia Spencer in Diablo Cody's directorial debut "Paradise." Derek Hough has also served as a "Dancing with the Stars" pro, though he recently took a season off to star alongside Korean pop singer BoA in Duane Adler's upcoming dance film "Cobu."

Great, more ways for Julianne Hough to spend Ryan Seacrest's money at premieres.
