The Simpsons Get an Oscar Nomination

Courtesy of David Silverman, director of "The Simpsons Movie" and various episodes of the long-running Fox comedy, America's favorite animated dysfunctional family is now in Oscar contention in the category of Best Animated Short. "The Longest Daycare," directed by Silverman and focused on the character of Maggie Simpson, has been nominated alongisde Minkyu Lee's "Adam and Dog," PES's "Fresh Guacamole," Timothy Reckart and Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly's "Head over Heels" and John Kahrs' "Paperman."

"The Longest Daycare" is a four-and-a-half-minute-long 3D short that was released, Pixar-style, in theaters in front of "Ice Age: Continental Drift." The film tells the story, sans dialog, of how Maggie attempts to save a butterfly from her unibrowed nemesis Baby Gerald during their daily stay at the Ayn Rand School for Tots. When reviewing the latest "Ice Age" installment at the New York Times, A.O. Scott wrote that the short was a lot better than the shrill, verbose franchise installment it preceded, and that it "cleverly blends the bright-colored flatness of the television show with the gimmickry of 3D. It also upholds (more than the TV series itself) one of the golden rules of animation: no talking."
