Watch: Mindy Kaling Looks for Love in the Trailer for 'The Mindy Project'

'The Mindy Project' Fox

Who hasn't watched Mindy Kaling as Kelly Kapoor on "The Office" (or as the friend who's more interesting than the leads in "The Five-Year Engagement" or "No Strings Attached") and thought "that girl deserves her own show"?

So it was welcome news when Fox picked up Kaling's new sitcom "The Mindy Project" for 2012-2013 -- the series will feature Kaling as an OB-GYN who's trying to get her personal and professional lives in order, with "True Blood" actor Anna Camp as her best friend and indie stalwart Chris Messina as the colleague she's clearly going to snark at until they eventually fall in love.

The trailer for the show, below, like last year's one for "New Girl," looks more like a movie than a series, but if "The Mindy Project" ends up where "New Girl" did by the latter half of its first season, it'll be well worth a watch.

A second thought: There has been a great deal of comment over the years about the lack of roles for black women, especially on shows such as HBO's "Girls."

Well, Mindy Kaling, although of Indian descendant, will be the only non-blackk "black" woman with her only show next season. It will be be interesting to see how she is racially or ethnically portrayed, if at all.

Regardless, I still support her and wish her well, and will try and catch the show next season.

Well, I may have some reservations about the "needy girl" framework, but I've always enjoyed her work on The Office and that she wrote and produced some the shows. She's got Ed Helms and Bill Hader in the opening.
