Every glimpse HBO has offered so far of the network's upcoming limited series "True Detective" has looked incredibly promising, and this new trailer is no different, providing more insight into the central pair of Louisiana cops played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

Every glimpse HBO has offered so far of the network's upcoming limited series "True Detective" has looked incredibly promising, and this new trailer is no different, providing some insight into the characters of the central pair of Louisiana cops played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

The eight-episode series, which was created and written by Nic Pizzolatto and entirely directed by Cary Fukunaga ("Sin Nombre"), premieres in January, and this new promo gives more of a sense of the quietly nightmarish feel of its depiction of a search for a serial killer that spans 17 years. Take a look at the trailer below, as well as the new poster, which vows that "Man is the cruelest animal":
