Watch: Is This 'Portlandia' Nerd PSA the Latest Salvo in the 'Fake Geek Girl' Wars?
Has self-proclaimed nerdiness gone too far and stripped meaning from the term? In this sketch from the hipster-skewering Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein comedy series "Portlandia," currently in the midst of its third season on IFC, a man offers up an informative message from the "Portland Nerd Council." "A sexy girl who went and saw a second week screening of 'The Avengers' is not a nerd," he says. "Please get real -- if you're not a nerd, please don't call yourself one."
It's funny and deliberately awkward, but we have to ask: Plaintive cry of a member of an oppressed group who feels his identity has been co-opted? Or latest salvo in the "fake geek girl" dust-up currently consuming fan culture? You decide:
"The uploader has not made this video available in your country". Not fair, we also have fake nerds. More seriously though, gender is a non-issue here as far as I'm concerned. There's plenty of fake male nerds/geeks (and do you think all these Hollywood panelists at comic-con really are "such a fan of [insert franchise]"). Not to forget the infamous hipsters wearing shirts of heavy metal bands they never heard of.
