Last night's "Dexter" finale didn't mark the end of Showtime's psycho-horror storytelling trend -- it was accompanied by a teaser for the network's upcoming series "Penny Dreadful." Created by "Skyfall" writer John Logan and executive produced by Sam Mendes, "Penny Dreadful" interweaves iconic literary horror figures -- from Frankenstein to Dorian Gray to Count Dracula -- into a psychosexual horror thriller set in the dimly lit streets of Victorian London. The first two episodes of the 2014 series will be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, whose feature film directing credits include the "The Orphanage" and "The Impossible."
While there is admittedly little to discern from the teaser itself -- filming is set to begin next month -- the gloomily narrated video promises "I believe in curses, I believe in demons, I believe in monsters, do you?" over a shadowy backdrop that echoes the stirring unease championed by its predecessor, "Dexter," with a touch of the supernatural. Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Billie Piper, Harry Treadaway, Helen McCrory and others are set to star in the series. Check out the teaser below:
