"Derek," the new series from Ricky Gervais, finds the comedian moving away from the cringe humor with which he established his career in "The Office" and "Extras" and into territory that's... dare we say, sincere? Sweet? Openly about kindness? The half-hour dramedy is Netflix's latest original series, though unlike "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black," "Derek" has already aired on TV in the UK on Channel 4, with Netflix having the exclusive in all other territories. Gervais created, directed, wrote and plays the title character in "Derek," which is about a gentle, simple-minded care worker in a home for the elderly and his friends and colleagues, played by Kerry Godliman, Karl Pilkington and David Earl. The full seven-episode first season of the series will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, September 12 at 12:01am PT, and a second season has already been commissioned by Channel 4.
