“Tetro,” “Phillip Morris,” “Humpday” Set For Director’s Fortnight

Francis Ford Coppola’s “Tetro” is set to open the 41st edition of Directors’ Fortnight, running May 14-24, 2009. The film was offered a non-competing slot by Thierry Fremaux in this year’s official Cannes selection, but Coppola declined. According to Variety, it was Fortnight head Olivier Pere’s enthusiasm for the film that changed Coppola’s mind, giving the Fortnight arguably its biggest name ever. “After Coppola announced that he wouldn’t show ‘Tetro’ out of competition, we asked to screen it for the Quinzaine,” Pere told Variety. “We loved it! And our enthusiasm convinced Coppola that an opening Fortnight slot would be the ideal place to debut his film.” Five U.S. directors will be screening work in the Fortnight - four more than the Official Selection. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s “I Love You Phillip Morris” - still without a distributor after its Sundance showing - joins fellow Sundance alums “Humpday,” directed by Lynn Shelton, and Cherien Dabis’ “Amreeka,” as well as Josh and Benny Safdie’s “Go Get Some Rosemary.” Josh Safdie’s previous feature, “The Pleasure of Being Robbed,” was in the 2008 Fortnight. Portugese director Pedro Costa also returns to the Fortnight - his “Colossal Youth” competed in the 2006 edition - with the documentary “Ne change rien,” which follows Gallic thesp/singer Jeanne Balibar through rehearsals and concerts. South Kore’as Hong Sang-soo, who competed for the Palme d’Or in 2004 and 2005, will screen his new film, “LIke You Know It All.” Quebecois films also had a very strong year, with three titles coming from the Canadian province. 19 year old Xavier Dolan’s debut, “J’ai tue ma mere” (I Killed My Mother), Denis Villeneuve’s “Polytechnique,” a dramatization of the 1989 shootings at the Montreal’s Polytechnique School, and Denis Cote’s “Carcasses,” a drama set in a auto junkyard.
