The Made in NY Media Center by IFP Officially Opens: Names Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson as Founding Artist-in-Residence

Mayor Bloomberg and Mayor's Office of Media & Entertainment Commissioner Katherine Oliver were on hand Tuesday morning to officially open the Made in NY Media Center by IFP in Brooklyn's Dumbo.

"New technologies and distribution platforms are appearing every day, and entrepreneurs, growing businesses and creative individuals will have the chance to harness their skills with the educational resources provided by the Media Center as well as the community network that's being established here," said Mayor Bloomberg.

Bloomberg pointed out that "the center also has the first government-sponsored incubator for transmedia in which different elements of a story are told through different media. That could be, for example, a movie that combines aspects of film, gaming and social media. These initiatives will fuel innovation and collaboration and technology and media…They'll help foster a lot of great ideas and help foster a lot of 'Made in NY' companies and 'Made in NY' jobs."

The Made in NY Media Center by IFP offers memberships for storytellers, artists, technology entrepreneurs and media corporate partners. Among the anchor tenants signed on to the Media Center are Astronauts Wanted, a new cross-platform entertainment company headed by Judy McGrath and Nick Shore, and Playmatics, which builds engaging games and user experiences on the internet and social media. Verizon has signed on as a technology partner. illycaffe has signed on a sponsor and will  host a series of events at the Media Center throughout the year focused on categories of Art and Design, Creativity and Craft and Art of Coffee.  Other partners include General Assembly, the education company, which will offer a wide variety of classes, and Cornell, which will co-produce a conversation series.

"New York City has seen remarkable growth in recent years in the digital and entertainment industries," said Commissioner Oliver. "With this growth and the ever-evolving media landscape, we want the Made in NY Media Center by IFP to be the connecting bridge between these industries so that new opportunities can be created across disciplines. Whether it's an independent filmmaker working with a gaming company to create a short film or a digital startup networking with an established media company, we look forward to seeing what inventive and creative projects emerge from the Center."

Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson will be the Media Center's founding artist-in-residence, announced Joana Vincente, executive director of IFP and Made in NY Media Center by IFP. "Every art movement has a center, and we're here today to celebrate the birth of a new center," said Thompson.

Throughout the month of October, the center will present several art installations which highlight new ways of storytelling, including a Lance Weiler/David Cronenberg video project that includes a 3D printer, and exclusive footage of their media art project, to MPC's Digital's "The Color Project," which explores narratives through color, line and form found in geographic satellite imagery.

The 20,000 square foot space features an "incubator" space with 120 dedicated desks and 40 flexible work spaces, classrooms, editing rooms, conference rooms, a screening room, a public art gallery and a cafe. IFP was selected as the developer and operator of the Made in NY Media Center in March 2012. Find out more about the Made in NY Media Center by IFP here.
