The adult entertainment industry has always bred innovators. And it was only a matter of time before the porn world got sucked into the crowdfunding craze. The adult entertainment industry has always bred innovators. And it was only a matter of time before the porn world got sucked into the crowdfunding craze. So it’s hardly a surprise that Extra Lunch Money launched Offbeatr Thursday, the first real effort to turn the fevered dreams of sexually creative types -- filmmakers, artists, authors, inventors -- into a much more collaborative affair.

GigaOm’s Janko Roettgers has a piece today that explains that not only is this a porn version of Kickstarter, it's adding two crucial experiments to the mix. From the start, pitches must be approved by Offbeatr’s management team before they are available for fundraising on the site, presumably to weed out the nuttier (read: illegal) ideas. But the site will also involve crowdsourced curation, whereby users of the site can vote for and give feedback on promising ideas, and the most popular will also be taken into consideration by the Offbeatr crew.

The second innovation is that Offbeatr users will be permitted to sell digital material on the site, distinct from whether they hit their fundraising goals. As a potential additional revenue source, the merchandising aspect could augment or stand in for the original campaign.

Here are the, uh, money grafs:

This can help creators secure some bridge funding even if they fall short of their goal, and it could also turn a site like Kickstarter from a one-off crowdfunding platform into something more like a digital marketplace.…

Of course, there’s no guarantee that either the sale of digital downloads or the voting mechanism will make for a better crowdfunding experience, but it’s worth a try – and Kickstarter and its competitors should watch Offbeatr closely.
