"The English Patient" Takes Oscar For Picture And Director



Beginning the night appropriately by calling the it a "Sundance by the
sea", host Billy Crystal ushered 15 of the 24 awards of the night to
independent films, including Best Director and Picture to Anthony
Minghella's "The English Patient". The evening was dotted with commentary
on the blood, sweat, and tears of independent filmmaking, but one of the
more notable quotes came from Jessica Yu, director of the winning short
doc "Breathing Lessons", "You know you've entered new territory when your
dress costs more than your film."


Other indies walking away with Oscars include "Fargo"'s Francis McDormand,
Billy Bob Thorton for his adaptation of his own" Sling Blade", and Leon
Gast and David Sonenberg for their doc "When We Were Kings". The complete
