Kino's "Fallen Angels" and Artistic License's "Don't Look Back" dominated
the Indie Top Ten this past weekend with strong per screen averages. Both
films are in the early weeks of release and are drawing healthy
numbers. On the other end of the spectrum Live's "Illtown" expanded poorly
from 2 to 28 screens. In its third weekend, the film's per screen average
of $621 was among the lowest of the 43 films surveyed in this week's EDI
report.
In the "Other Top 5" listing, Miramax' "Good Will Hunting" remained strong,
grossing only a percentage point less than last weekend. The film will pass
the $60 million mark early this week as Miramax execs anxiously await next
weeks Oscar nominations and a potential box office increase for the Gus Van
Sant film. Probably less exciting for Miramax this past weekend were the
disappointing grosses for its new film, "Phantoms." The movie made 63% less
than last weekend and earned a per screen average of just $606.
