Trimark's "Star Kid" and "Eve's Bayou" remained in the one-two position
atop the leader board, this week, but the relatively high number of screens
on which they appear rank their per-screen average near the bottom of the
Indie Top Ten. Live's "Illtown" continued to disappoint, dropping off more
than 60%, while dropping from 28 screens to 17 one week after expanding to
28 from 2. The top three per screen pics this week are the two freshmen,
First Run Features "Paul Monette" and Island Digital's "General Chaos", and
four week-old "Full Speed" from Strand Releasing.
In the "Other Top 5" listings, Miramax's "Good Will Hunting" continued its
strong pre-Oscar showing, dropping off 19% while approaching the $70
million mark. With the film expected to receive several Oscar nods on
Tuesday, Miramax expanded this film's exposure by 326 screens on Friday.
The other two films in this week's list to post gains were also favored for
Oscar nominations, with October's "The Apostle" picking up 73% over the
past week, and New Line's "Boogie Nights" expanded by 493 screens and
watched as its weekend gross grew by a whopping 1,163%.
