“The Way,” “Children” Lead Newport Winners

The 2009 Newport International Film Festival, which ran from June 3-7, 2009, announced its Jury, Student, and Audience Award winners yesterday in the Filmmaker Lounge at the fest headquarters at Empire Tea & Coffee in Newport. Top honors went to Tze Chun’s “Children of Invention,” winner of the Narrative Jury Prize, and Aron Gaudet’s “The Way We Get By,” winner of the Documentary Jury Prize. The ceremony was kicked off and introduced by Executive Director Jennifer Maizel, Artistic Director Tom Hall and Programmers Holly Herrick and Andrea van Bueren. The narrative jury consisted of Alison Willmore, Editor of IFC.com, Jake Perlin, Associate Film Programmer at BamCinematek and Founder of The Film Desk, and Adam Kossack, Manager at management and production firm Anonymous Content, while the documentary jury consisted of Wendy Mitchell, Senior Editor of Screen International and ScreenDaily.com, Clemence Taillandier, Head of Theatrical Sales at Zeitgeist Films, and Jeremiah Zagar, Director, In A Dream.
