In an interesting reversal of policy, the New York Times has returned to
their earlier policy of allowing their critics to serve on panels involving
awards other than journalism. Thelma Adams, Chair of the New York Film
Critics Circle announced that as of November 17th, Janet Maslin, head New
York Times film critic has joined the Circle. Times film critic Stephen
Holden will also be joining the panel.
Earlier this fall, indieWIRE reported that the Film Critics Circle would be
expanding to include three new members, at which time the Times had not
expressed intentions of changing its policy. Adams said the Circle does not
have a fixed number of members, so the Times' decision to allow its critics
to join the Circle was a welcome one. "We're all as happy as can be," Adams
said about the addition.
