Before the Trailer, We Thought: RADiUS-TWC already teased us earlier this month with their first trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's second go-round with Ryan Gosling, confirming that the duo's follow-up to "Drive" would be just as hard-hitting and awesome as their first collaboration.
And Now? Consider us stoked. A mere few hours after Cannes confirmed that "Only God Forgives" would be playing in competition just as "Drive" did two years ago (culminating in a Best Director win for Refn), an international trailer surfaced online, showcasing more of the film's plot and Kristin Scott Thomas' blistering performance as Gosling's vengeful mother.
Like "Drive," "Only God Forgives" looks like an impeccably crafted and eye-popping affair, boasting its fair share of extreme violence and neon lighting. The international spot does a clearer job of establishing the plot: Thomas, as the menacing matriarch of a drug empire, orders her son (Gosling), a manager of an illegal Thai boxing ring, to hunt down his brother (and her son's) killer (played by Vithaya Pansringarm). Cue the bloody mayhem.
Gosling seems to be in "Drive" mode: quiet, menacing and tantalizingly mysterious. But from the looks of this new trailer, "Only God Forgives" seems be Thomas' show. After making a name for herself in France by appearing in a slew of acclaimed French films over the past several years, Thomas clearly had a blast tackling her highest profile English-language role in over a decade.
Watch the international trailer below and head on over to The Playlist for another international promo that also hit the web early this morning.
