Before the trailer, we thought: Visionary helmer Alfonso Cuarón has kept his fans waiting a whopping seven years for a follow-up to his dystopian downer "Children of Men," and by all accounts, he hasn't been resting on his laurels. His seventh feature "Gravity" has been a long time coming, but the 3D project is no doubt his most ambitious and ballsiest endeavor to date. In the sci-fi film, Cuaron has George Clooney and Sandra Bullock suit up as two astronauts struggling to survive on a remote space station after satellite debris wipes out the rest of the crew and their ship. Featuring a cast of just two and a dark premise, the film is an anomaly for distributor Warner Bros., who are no doubt betting they have a game changer on their hands.

And now? Game changer or not, "Gravity" looks terrifying and unlike anything else out there. The brief trailer (it runs a mere minute and 30 seconds) starts out soothingly enough with Clooney and Bullock observing the sunrise at 372 miles above the earth. And then all hell breaks loose.

In 3D, the experience looks likely to be a hard to handle one if the deep, dark recesses of space scare you -- and they ought to. The final shot of Bullock's character being flung out into space is the stuff of nightmares. How (and if) they make it back to Earth is anyone's guess. But you can bet we're dying to find out after watching this enticing promo. Warner Bros. opens it October 4.
