True/False Film Fest to Honor Russian Director Victor
Kossakovsky as 2012 True Vision Award Recipient

COLUMBIA, Mo. (Feb. 6, 2012)—Each year the True/False Film Fest gives the True Vision Award, its only prize, to a director whose work has creatively advanced the field of nonfiction filmmaking. This mid‐career award recognizes creativity and commitment to the art and craft of documentary. This year’s True Vision honoree, Victor Kossakovsky, is
a master of his craft.

Though not as well‐known in the U.S. as some past True Vision recipients, Kossakovsky is
renowned for his work in Europe and elsewhere. True/False is joining forces with the
Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York to bring Kossakovsky to the U.S. and
expose American audiences to his unique genius. His most recent film, ¡Vivan las
Antipodas!, will show at MOMA in late February before it shows at True/False March 1‐
4.

Kossakovsky, has won awards at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film
Festival (IDFA), the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Karlovy Vary International
Film Festival and Dok Leipzig Festival. Kossakovsky also started his own St. Petersburg‐
based production company, to make visionary documentaries unlike any other.

¡Vivan las Antipodas! is one such film, capturing unforgettable, sometimes playful
imagery of the Earth’s antipodal pairs — locations on the planet directly opposite one
another. Kossakovsky examines four different antipodal pairs in the film: Argentina and
China, Spain and New Zealand, Chile and Russia and Botswana and Hawaii.

The film was met with critical acclaim at its premiere at the Venice Film Festival and at
its subsequent showing at IDFA. Also showing at True/False this year is Kossakovsky’s
first film, The Belovs (1994).

For the last nine years the True Vision Award has honored filmmakers in the primes of
their careers, who are working to challenge the traditions of documentary and find new
creative directions in nonfiction filmmaking. Past True Vision winners include Joe
Berlinger & Bruce Sinofsky (2004), Stephen Marshall (2005), Kirby Dick (2006), Brett
Morgen (2007), Alex Gibney (2008), Kim Longinotto (2009), Laura Poitras (2010), and
James Marsh in 2011.  Each honoree is given a bronze edition of an original sculpture by Columbia artist Larry Young plus $5000 in credit towards post‐production work at
AlphaCine Labs in Seattle.  This year’s award is sponsored by Timothy D. McGarity, MD.
