A charming new trailer has been released for Joe Swanberg's latest film "Happy Christmas"--the director's first foray into 16mm since film school. The mumblecore filmmaker welcomes back Anna Kendrick, who had a supporting role in his last and well-received feature "Drinking Buddies," as well as Melanie Lynskey, Mark Webber, and Lena Dunham. Swanberg himself stars as a married father who takes in his sister after she suffers the setback of a bad breakup. All actors appear to be in top form, particularly Kendrick who is acting against type as the irresponsible younger sister who attempts to redeem herself after a disastrous drunken night.
Indiewire's Eric Kohn gave it a warm review, awarding it a B+ and claiming it to be an appealing gateway into Swanberg's filmography. "Sweetly funny and relatable, 'Happy Christmas' builds on the director's previous work by channeling its strong aspects — naturalism and self-effacing, true-to-life humor — into a relatively straightforward but utterly enjoyable character study," he wrote back in January after its Sundance premiere.
The film will first be released on iTunes on June 26 and then in theaters on July 25.
