Asa Butterfield made a name for himself as the lead in Martin Scorsese's acclaimed family drama "Hugo," but after taking a blockbuster detour last fall to headline "Ender's Game," the talented young actor is returning to more emotional fare in Morgan Matthews' debut feature, "X+Y."
In the film, Butterfield stars as Nathan, a teenage math prodigy who forms an unusual bond with his unconventional teacher and mentor, Mr. Humphreys (Rafe Spall). When the boy genius earns a coveted spot on Great Britain's team for the International Mathematics Olympics, he heads to Taiwan for the competition under a new coach (Eddie Marsan) and quickly forms a budding relationship that he can't quite understand with his Chinese competitor, Zhang Mei (Jo Yang). Co-starring the wonderful Sally Hawkins as Nathan's mother, the movie follows the boy as he balances knowledge and first love.
