Watch: Clip From HBO Doc 'Casting By' Illustrates the Importance of the Casting Director

Finding the right actors to play a part is a task that viewers don't see, but has the invaluable influence and potential to literally make or break a film. In "Casing By," Tom Donahue's new documentary screening as part of the HBO Doc Summer Series, a light is shed on the crucial role of the casting director, arguably one of the unsung heroes of a film's production.

In this exclusive clip from the doc, Marion Dougherty, the late and great casting director who was in charge of the casting on over 70 feature films in her illustrious career, including everything from "Midnight Cowboy" to "Batman," is profiled. Despite her passing in 2011, it is made clear from interviews in the clip that the work she did has had an enduring influence on the occupation that is still seen today. Actress Glenn Close even acknowledges the singular accomplishments of Dougherty, saying "You cannot separate the work of somebody like Marion Dougherty from what the final outcome of the film is, it's just impossible."

"Casting By" premieres August 5 on HBO.
