Two weeks ago a video entitled "Clapping for the Wrong Reasons [internet version]" surfaced on YouTube under the account "i am donald," playing almost like a teaser trailer for some mysterious project featuring "Community" star Donald Glover, who also has a rap career where he goes by the name Childish Gambino. Now the "director's cut" of the project has surfaced, and you get the chance to bask in all of its strange, illusive glory.
Running just under 25 minutes and directed by Hiro Murai, "Clapping for the Wrong Reasons" captures Glover as he walks around his L.A. mansion interacting with his various assortment of hanger-ons, including recording music with electronic musician/producer Flying Lotus and even "Boy Meets World" star Danielle Fishel, who is seen picking fruit out of a tree as she recounts a bizarre dream she had. It's all bizarre yet strangely watchable, transfixing even. Whether this is the teaser for a longer feature or simply a one-off indulgence is yet to be known.
