Ethan Hawke sure has a passion for playing writer (no surprise really, given that he's one himself). He played one in "Before Sunrise," its follow-up "Before Sunset," and in his latest, "The Woman in the Fifth" (in theaters this Friday). Turns out he's at it again in his upcoming horror film, "Sinister," which premiered to good word of mouth as a 'secret screening' at this year's SXSW Film Festival, and just got a terrifying trailer.
In the film, opening October 5, Hawke plays a true crime novelist who uncovers a box of home videos showing other families being brutally murdered. His investigation leads him to suspect that there is a supernatural element to the story, and that his own family may soon well be a target.
Indiewire's Eric Kohn is a fan. In his review of the film from SXSW, Kohn wrote: "Anchored by a moody Ethan Hawke performance and classically unsettling scare tactics, this icy supernatural thriller from director Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") and co-written by Ain't It Cool News contributor C. Robert Cargill (aka "Massawyrm") delivers on the promise of its title by boiling down its appeal to pure atmosphere."
