The first trailer for John Michael McDonagh's "Calvary" has hit. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where we said it, "delivers an emotional wallop." The film was picked up by Fox Searchlight and then went on to win Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Berlin Film Festival.
Star Brendan Gleeson played a foul-mouthed and funny police officer in McDonah's "The Guard," but here the director took him in a far more serious direction as a priest who becomes the target of a sexual abuse victim seeking revenge. Though Gleeson's priest is innocent of the crime, the un-specified assailant is out to take the life of a man of the cloth just for kicks. Any one of the film's ensemble cast, including Chris O'Dowd, Aidan Gillan and Dylan Moran, could be the killer. Kelly Reilly also co-stars as Gleeson's pre-priesthood daughter.
"Calvary" opens in limited release on August 1st. Check out the new trailer below:
