Watch: Idris Elba Embodies Nelson Mandela in the First Teaser for 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom'

Starting today in theaters worldwide you can see Idris Elba fight off alien monsters in "Pacific Rim." While that film is unlikely to snag him any awards come Fall, his next project, the Nelson Mandela biopic "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," is -- should it go over well.

Based on Mandela's autobiography of the same name and directed by Justin Chadwick ("The First Grader"), the drama stars Elba as the titular political activist and Bond's new Moneypenny, Naomie Harris, as his ex-wife Winnie Mandela. From the looks of the just-released teaser, the British Elba has nailed down the tricky South Africa accent. How his performance stacks up is still in question. Thoughts?

The Weinstein Company opens "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" November 29th.

Good teaser. Pretty good accent. I'm really looking forward to seeing this one!

The accent really isn't convincing me.

While he doesn't sound exactly like Mandela, it's quite a good accent (better than Morgan Freeman in Invictus). Trust me, I'm South African! Plus if he's portraying a younger Mandela with the voice over, he's bang on.

The accent seems okay, but Mandela has a distinctly throatier sound which has seemingly been eschewed either because Elba can't do it, or because it won't lend the picture as much gravitas. Still, this is a pretty stunning teaser, as they go.
