Even with its abundance of machine-gun fire, sculpted upper bodies, and "Street Fighter" style hand-to-hand combat, the new trailer for John Hyams's "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning" would seem, at a glance, to showcase a strange, bruising horror flick, rather than the fourth installment of a Jean-Claude Van Damme action franchise. Still, let's read on.

The trailer's first half, set off in low flickering lights, lingers over blood-smeared walls, medical abnormalities and talk of monsters. Enter the world of John (Scott Adkins), a reanimated dead soldier (Unisol, for the uninitiated) haunted by the murder of his family. Newly awakened from a coma and beset by hallucinations, John sets off on the killer's trail. Responsible for the slaughter is Luc Deveraux (Van Damme), who together with another original Unisol recruit (Dolph Lundgren) is leading a rogue Unisol army, Kurtz-style, without government oversight.

If this all sounds a little far-fetched, and if none of the above is evident from the trailer, do not be discouraged. Like the film itself, the new red band subordinates the trappings of plot and narrative to the nightmare logic of a dystopian subconscious. The results are as delightful as they are disturbing.
