GKIDS, the award-winning distributor of animated adult and family films, is about to bring a Studio Ghibli masterpiece to North America for the very first time. Isao Takahata's "Only Yesterday" is one of the most acclaimed titles in the Ghibli library, yet it never received a domestic release when it opened internationally back in 1991. Fortunately, that's all about to change.
Featuring the voices of "Star Wars" breakout Daisy Ridley and Dev Patel, a new English-language version of the drama will finally bring the never-before-released classic to the U.S. after 25 years. Ridley voices Taeko, an unmarried 27-year-old who has lived her entire life in Tokyo. While traveling by train to visit her family in the country, certain memories flood back of her as a schoolgirl in 1966, and she starts to question whether she has been true to herself as the past and present collide.
The North American rollout of "Only Yesterday" will begin on January 1 at New York City's IFC Center. GKIDS is planning a nationwide expansion on February 26 (click here for theaters). Watch the new trailer above, and check out the official U.S. poster below.
