The role not only won her significant acclaim at the time, but cast such a lasting impression that it served as part of the impetus for Riva being cast in her most memorable later-in-life roles: as Juliette Binoche's mother in Krzysztof Kieślowski's "Three Colors: Blue," and in Michael Haneke's "Amour."
Here's Riva at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival, looking gorgeous and being totally charming, discussing the parallels between "Hiroshima" and her own life and wondering if she'll ever top her performance in the film, which was her first.
