BBC stalwarts director Farren Blackburn ("Doctor Who," "The Fades") and writer Matthew Read (who also penned last year's remake of Nicolas Winding Refn's "Pusher") have teamed up for the Viking epic "Hammer of the Gods," which Magnet will release this summer.

Starring Charlie Bewley ("The Vampire Diaries") and Clive Standen from The History Channel's "Vikings," the film follows a young warrior who ventures across Britain in 871 AD in search of his estranged brother, with lots of requisite slow motion action sequences along the way. The newly released red band trailer showcases more than its share of blood, usually accompanied by equally grotesque screams of victory, as well as a large number of tattoos. Viking aficionados, please sound off in the comments to let us know if tattoos actually existed in any form in 871 AD. The titular hammer, on the other hand, does not make an appearance.

Magnet has something of a strong track record with over the top action films such as this, with movies like Takashi Miike's "13 Assassins" and John Hyam's "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning" being especially warmly received, so it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Blackburn and Read could surpass expectations and turn in something that's more "Valhalla Rising" (Read is listed as a producer on Refn's "Only God Forgives") than the bumper crop of generic genre movies with similar premises.

You can check out the red band below, and if you like what you see you can hear all those manly roars in a theater when the film is released on July 5th.
