The multi-talented English comedian Richard Ayoade (of TV’s “The IT Crowd”) is following his warmly-received directorial debut "Submarine" with the new thriller "The Double," which stars Jesse Eisenberg as both lead and villain.
The film is based on a novella by Fyodor Dostoyevky and seems to have adopted the Russian author’s taste for dark humor. Despite beginning with a mysterious voice-over and visual tones of horror, the trailer quickly shows signs of comedy, particularly with appearances by Wallace Shawn and Noah Taylor. Playing the self-deprecating outsider will be easy for Eisenberg (an Oscar-nominee for "The Social Network"), but it should be fun to see him antagonize himself as the more self-assured doppelgänger who begins to take over his life.
The film also features the lovely Mia Wasikowska (recently seen in another thriller, "Stoker") in addition to supporting players Sally Hawkins (currently an Oscar nominee for “Blue Jasmine”), Chris O’Dowd (Ayoade’s costar in “The IT Crowd”), Yasmin Page, and James Fox. It opens May 9th in select U.S. theaters.
