by Eugene Hernandez
In a move that has had insiders here in New York buzzing all week, Bob and Harvey Weinstein have hired Glen Basner to run their international division, overseeing worldwide sales, marketing, and distribution for The Weinstein Company. Basner is starting at TWC immediately, leaving his post as executive vice president of international sales and distribution at Focus Features. Basner will handle similar duties at Miramax, assuming full-time responsibilities at TWC on October 1st when the Weinsteins leave Disney.
In a statement, Bob and Harvey Weinstein called the move a "huge coup" for their new company. "As the Weinstein Company begins to focus on the international arena, I can't think of a more qualified person to spearhead all of our international activities than Glen," said the Weinsteins in the statement. "Glen's extensive knowledge of foreign sales and international distribution is exactly the fit we are looking for at our new company."
The Weinsteins indicated Wednesday in a statement that they plan to expand home video and TV activities at TWC, with Basner working closely with the new company's acquisitions team.
While at Focus, Basner oversaw international distribution for Zhang Yimou's "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers," Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," Pedro Almodóvar's "Hable Con Ella" (Talk to Her), Alejandro González Innárritu's "21 Grams," and Sofia Coppola's "Lost In Translation," among other films.
The exec has a long history with Focus Features co-presidents David Linde and James Schamus, having worked at Good Machine as VP of sales. He started his career at Good Machine, serving as Director of Development before leading its sales department.
