In our vote for the best (and oddest) bit of casting news to break this year, Variety reported today that Werner Herzog has been cast as the villain in Tom Cruise's upcoming thriller, "One Shot."
In his first major acting role (he's had cameos in a number of projects including "Mister Lonely" and "What Dreams May Come"), the veteran documentary filmmaker will play The Zec, an ex-prisoner of war pursued by Cruise's character, a former military policeman.
Our guess for why Herzog agreed? He got inspired (or jealous) watching Hugo Weaving impersonate him as Red Skull in "Captain America: The First Avenger." Fast forward to the 1:50 second mark on the trailer below to witness a snippet of Weaving's uncanny impression.
Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, Alexia Fast and Jai Courtney round out the cast for "One Shot," written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. It's slated to open February 8, 2013. Herzog's next film, "Into the Abyss," opens in limited release November 11 through IFC Films.
