WGA Names Nominees

With the Academy Award nominations just days away, the Writers Guild has
announced its nominees for oustanding screenwriting. Notably, four of the
writers nominated also directed the movies they wrote.


In the category of screenplay written directly for the screen, the nominees are:


Mark Andrus and James L. Brooks, "As Good as It Gets"

Paul Thomas Anderson for "Boogie Nights"

Simon Beaufoy for "The Full Monty,"

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for "Good Will Hunting"

James Cameron for "Titanic"


And in the category of best adaptation:


Paul Attanasio, "Donnie Brasco," based on a book by Joseph Pistone with
Richard Woodley

James Schamus for "The Ice Storm," based on the Rick Moody novel

Brian Helgeland & Curtis Hanson for "L.A. Confidential," based on the James
Ellroy novel

Hilary Henkin and David Mamet for "Wag the Dog," based on the book "American
Hero" by Larry Beinhart

Hossein Amini for "The Wings of the Dove," based on the Henry James novel


The awards will be presented on February 21, 1998 in New York and Los Angeles.
