REVIEW | Lingua Romania: "Police, Adjective" Makes for Arresting Tour-De-Force

While the pay-off in this anti-police procedural comes very late, it caps a minimalist and sardonic tour-de-force from Corneliu Porumboiu, whose "12:08 East of Bucharest" won the award for best first film at Cannes in 2006. This worthy follow-up shows an even more discerning and confident eye from t...

REVIEW | Low on Luster, Gilliam's "Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" Winds up a Sideshow

Marred by shoddy special effects and half-formed fantastical conceits, Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" has the feeling of a comic fantasia desperately seeking to find its rhythm. Box Office: "Nine" Just Fine In Busy Pre-Xmas Weekend

More than a dozen specialty films - most of them basking in the glow of varying amounts of Golden Globe, SAG and critics notices - competed in the shadow of east coast snowstorms and James Cameron's "Avatar" this weekend (just a quick non-indie fyi: "Avatar" grossed a massive $232 million worldwide ...

    Avatar

Avatar is at once a fascinating and a frustrating movie. I found much of it captivating, and while I resist the hype-driven phrase “immersive experience,” I did find myself drawn into its 3-D world, an extraordinarily rich cinematic environment created, in breathtaking detail, by artists and computers. I didn’t think I could care about odd-looking humanoid characters, but I did. I didn’t think I would relate to the interaction between humans and aliens, but I did. Writer-director James Cameron has delivered on his promise to take filmmaking to another level by fully realizing his imaginative visual concepts of character and design......
