Sundance Hit 'Like Crazy' Hits October 28th, 'The Devil Inside' Thrills On Feb 24, 2012

With the cost of movies ever rising, profit margins on the biggest budget pictures ain't what they used to be. With most tentpoles coming in around the $150 million mark these days (with some well over $200m), even without a press & advertising cost of at least 50% of the budget, the special-effects...

Great Odin's Raven! Early Reviews Suggest 'Thor' Is Actually Kind Of Decent

The summer of superheroes is about to kick off, and it's only a matter of days until the world gets its first look at "Thor," Marvel's latest piece of an insanely ambitious five-film plan building towards next summer's team-up movie, "The Avengers." And for some time, it looked like the film had an uphill battle ahead of it -- last year's "Iron Man 2" was, at best, a disappointment, and early looks at "Thor" had veered from the underwhelming to the silly. But ahead of its release in some parts of the world next week, and the States on May 6th, the film has now screened, with the world premiere taking place in Sydney last night, and critics th...

One particular upcoming adaptation though -- which the st...

The Jury Awards - International Women's Film Festival 2011

The International Women's Film Festival concluded last evening in Dortmund, Germany. Over 8,000 people saw movies, went to concerts, and went to workshops over the last five days. Pretty impressive number. I had the honor of being on the jury for the international feature competition which awarde...

Thor Early Reviews: Good Not Great, Hemsworth and Gods Better Than Earthlings [UPDATED]

Paramount screened the first summer movie, Kenneth Branagh's Thor (May 6), for junket press and critics. Here's a sampling of early reviews, which largely agree that this is a good, not great comic-to-screen adaptation, Chris Hemsworth breaks out in the title role, and the film's earth-bound section...

Watch: Spike Jonze Short For Opening Ceremony, Darren Aronofsky Directs Ad For Yves Saint Laurent

With only 3 feature films to his credit over the last 12 years, Spike Jonze has still managed to keep busy in the world of commercials and the occasional music video. His latest is a collaboration between world reknown cellist Yo-Yo Ma and famed LA dancer Lil Buck. (As a member of The Playlist staff put it "that kid is like spaghetti.") It's more a case of Jonze assembling these two artists in one place and less of a Jonze directed short film, but it's still pretty unbelievable to watch. Jonze says this of the project, "The other day, I was lucky enough to be at an event to bring the arts back into schools and got to see an amazing collaborat...

Box Office: 'Rio' First 2011 Release To Crack $40 Million Opening Weekend; 'Scream' Goes Quiet

There’s no way to sugarcoat this: it’s been a dismal year at the box office. Studios have their fingers crossed in regards to a tepid-looking summer schedule, but many were hoping the season could be kick(punch)-started early with a strong April, as two new films were tracking well over $40 million ...
